Humans and plants are inextricably linked as we depend on them for nourishment, medicine, and spiritual enrichment. Just as each plant has unique therapeutic qualities, each has distinctive metaphysical qualities that we have come to understand through a myriad of curative and spiritual practices around the globe.
Perfume, in Latin per fumus meaning “through smoke”, is the original method of experiencing the scent, or the essence of a plant. Our individual likes and dislikes of a particular fragrance is profoundly and uniquely connected to our memories. Scent has a curious ability to bring us back to a distinct place and time, to inspire, to explore hidden desires, to elicit feelings that we may have placed away, and to remind us of our connectedness. This is why we custom blend perfume for individuals through a process of looking into memories, associations, feelings, and aspirations.
Each of us is unique and we want to celebrate that through scent. Wherever you are in life, whatever your challenges or celebrations, we want to offer support and inspiration through the olfactory. We want to honor your process and offer another tool to assist in your transformation no matter how small or how significant.
In mythology, there were nine muses that provided inspiration to the arts and sciences. Tenth Muse fragrance is intended to be your olfactory source of inspiration for your personal expressions. Your fragrance should of course smell good, but also, it should feel good. Smell for yourself.
Founder
After becoming one of the first 100 registered aromatherapists in the US in 2001, Mary Jo has been honing her skills as an olfactory artist. She worked as an esthetician and make-up artist for feature film and print advertising for over 15 years. Now she is combining those talents with her passion for scent, plants, and nature. Her botanical fragrance company, Tenth Muse, is the culmination of her life’s experience with the olfactory, observations of how people and plants interact, and the desire to continually experience and create connections.
Every place, every person, and every experience has its own scent. It is something you can feel, not just smell. It is there reminding us, inspiring us, nurturing us, and bringing us back to the present. Mary Jo thinks this should be celebrated and enjoyed to the fullest. Her 100% natural fragrances are made using only essential oils, including rare and precious, tinctures crafted by her, and organic wheat alcohol. Good intentions, gratitude, imagination, and love are ever-present.
